Prof. Dawid Janas
Professor Dawid Janas is the Head of Functional Nanomaterials Group at the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice, Poland. He graduated from the same University with a MSc degree in Industrial and Engineering Chemistry in 2010 (one year of this course was conducted by him at the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague, Czech Republic). Then, he joined Electric Carbon Nanomaterials Group at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. There, he completed a PhD course in Materials Science in 2014 and remained as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate. During this time, he was a co-investigator in an ERC Starting Grant and a FP7 project Ultrawire carried out by 12 academic and industrial partners from all over Europe. The results of his doctoral work led to successful grant application in a Proof of Concept program organized by the ERC. That enabled execution of a 15-month long Thawing* project focused on development of new aircraft deicing systems based on carbon nanostructures. Encouraging results enabled him and Dr Koziol to establish a start-up company Cnergytec Ltd to commercialize this invention. In 2016, he was awarded a Polonez fellowship funded by the National Science Center and the European Commission, which enabled him to come back to his Alma Mater and establish his own research groupn. In 2018, he obtained a DSc (habilitation) degree in the field of Chemistry. In 2024, the President of the Republic of Poland awarded him a title of professor. Prof. Janas is a recipient of prestigious awards. He obtained, among others, START prize from the Foundation for Polish Science to 1 of the 100 most talented young scientists all over Poland (2017-2018), a stipend to Outstanding Early-Stage Researcher from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Poland (2018-2020) and Silesian Scientific Award given to academics who significantly contribute to the development of Polish, European and global science (2020). Recently, he won STEM Impact Award from the Fulbright Commission as well as Bekker Fellowship from National Agency for Academic Exchange to conduct research in the U.S. and Japan, respectively. He is currently a PI several externally funded grants.
